Wet drywall: save or replace

In Treasure Valley, a burst supply line under the kitchen sink or a slow roof leak can turn a section of drywall into a sponge within hours. The gypsum board is cheap to replace, but the real problem hides in the cavity behind it. If you caught the wet spot early, you may still have a salvage window. If the water was anything other than clean, that window is closed.

What happens inside the wall after a leak

Capillary action wicks water upward inside the wall cavity, so the wet line you see on the surface sits below the true wet line behind the board. That hidden moisture is the hardest area to dry and the place mold takes hold if you wait. The 24-to-48-hour window is the threshold. Dry the materials inside that window and the board can usually be saved. Past it, the risk climbs.

Three facts decide whether your drywall stays or comes out. How long it sat wet. Whether the water was clean (rain, a supply pipe) or contaminated (sewage, creek runoff). And whether the seams are lifting or the board is swelling. Contaminated water is a remove-it call, period. Clean water with intact seams and no swelling leaves in-place drying on the table. Swelling or a popped seam means removal.

What to check before you accept a quote

Ask for a moisture-meter reading. The pro should probe the affected area and then probe a dry section of the same wall for a control number. That comparison is the real test of whether the board is dry. If the meter still reads saturation in the cavity, the board needs to come down and a flood cut (a horizontal cut above the wet line) opens the space for airflow. Also ask about the fiberglass batting inside. Soaked insulation almost always costs less to pull and replace than to dry, so make sure that line item is in the estimate.
